Descriptive Prompt #1: The Tree

Hello to all of my twelve followers!

This is a short post today–I wouldn’t even consider this an article in the traditional sense. However, I still think there’s value here. This is the first of what I anticipate to be a series of similar exercises in creative description. As a fiction writer (primarily in Sci-Fi/Fantasy), description plays a significant role in the writing that I do.

The prompt for this exercise is simply the picture above (the tree in the woods). What do you think of when you look at this image? How would you describe this scene if it were in your story? Use as many (or as few) words as you would like. Even if you’ve never tried anything like this before, I urge you to give it a shot.

I’d love to read what you write, so consider posting! I’ll share my thoughts as a reader on what is effective and what could benefit from some adjustment. I’ll share my own sample soon.

Happy writing!

  1. It loomed like a sentinel of generations past, at once comforting and oppressive. Mossy streaks ran along its length, winding one way and the next with the deep channels made by gaps in its age-hardened shell. Undergrowth ran up to its base, but seldom close enough to touch it. The quiet chirrups of birds were altogether absent and the glade held an expectant breath. Sleepy warmth seeped through the forest canopy. β€œThis is my place,” the tree seemed to say, and the woods yielded to it.
